Abstract

Beat the Blues is a support group in Stockport providing information and support to anyone who thinks that they may be suffering from postnatal depression. Set up and run by a group of mothers who have lived with postnatal depression, the group offers a range of different activities and an opportunity to talk to others who feel the same. This article describes how the group was developed using a community development approach, and Rose Tyldesley describes her role as a community development worker in facilitating this. Linda Phillips describes how she got involved in group as a committee member, and what the group has meant for her.

Abstract

Online databases have become increasingly accessible to end users through the use of microcomputers. The quickly expanding family of end‐user databases and software support services reflects the diverse needs of end users. Two popular databases, Compu‐Serve and The Source, appeal to home and business users with direct access to such data as financial information, airline schedules, restaurant guides, weather news, and consumer tips. A related approach has been taken by DIALOG'S Knowledge Index and BRS/After Dark. Directed toward the home information consumer, these vendor services provide access to some 12 to 23 of their most frequently consulted online databases. Using simplified DIALOG and BRS search protocol, the microcomputer operator is charged a reduced fee by searching during evening and weekend hours. A third variation on end‐user searching exists in front‐end software programs such as OL'SAM, CAST and Userkit. These products allow the user to gain access to a variety of database vendors using a single search protocol; the user learns one set of commands which, through the mediation of the software, will work on several database systems. ISI's Sci‐Mate provides similar features.

Abstract

When, back in 1994, I spoke to the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) on the state of network development in Tennessee, I began by saying, “In Tennessee, as in many states, network development is multidimensional, multidisciplinary, multifaceted, multilateral, multidirectional—and therefore multi‐confusing.”

Abstract

The following is an annotated list of materials that discuss the ways in which librarians can provide library users with orientation to facilities and services, and instruct them in library information and computer skills. This is RSR's 11th annual review of this literature, and covers publications from 1984. A few items from 1983 have been included because of their significance, and because they were not available for review last year. Several items were not annotated because the compiler was unable to secure them.

Abstract

The following annotated bibliography of materials on orienting users to the library and on instructing them in the use of reference and other resources covers publications from 1979. A few items from 1978 were included because information about them had not been available in time for the 1978 listing. Some entries were not annotated because the compiler was unable to secure a copy of the item. The bibliography includes publications on user instruction in all types of libraries and for all types of users from children to adults. To facilitate the use of the list, it has been divided into categories by type of library. Even though the library literature includes many citations to items on user instruction in foreign countries, this bibliography includes only publications in the English language.

Abstract

Two companion articles have considered transfer pricing objectives and factors influencing the designing of these systems. This article, the last in the series, treats the topic of designing transfer pricing systems. Since many multinational firms have subsidiaries in the U.S., it is worthwhile to consider the U.S. Internal Revenue Service regulations regarding transfer pricing. Transfer pricing systems can be designed under a variety of alternative market scenarios. These topics are discussed in the first two sections of the article. The designing of profit‐oriented and cost‐oriented transfer pricing systems are considered in the next two sections. A mention of methods for selecting transfer pricing systems concludes the article.

Abstract

The Scholar's Workstation project at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville employs recent and developing technology to provide timely, convenient remote‐site access to information. The project serves four on ‐ and off‐campus sites associated with environmental studies. A station at each site includes an IBM‐compatible personal computer connected to the campus network to access electronic information resources and network tools. Graduate students from the School of Information Sciences serve as onsite team members who provide research assistance, technical assistance, and instruction. The project successfully tests a model for future library service, in which the workstations supply onsite access to information as an electronic branch library.

Abstract

Applied transfer pricing information has repeatedly been proven difficult to gather. Many enterprises work under secrecy regarding transfer pricing systems, believing that caution used in revealing information stymies possible problems related to transfer pricing that can involve internal and/or external factors. Even though there is some controversy concerning the appropriateness of the amount of data used in the research, interested parties can still benefit through studies of the transfer pricing literature.
